The Work
“Sea life” is a suspended installation, made from single-use plastic and driftwood, that references the problem of plastic pollution in the ocean.
White-washed pieces of driftwood are woven and wired together, and positioned on top of two wooden brackets attached to the wall, 90 inches above the floor. Hanging from the woven pieces of driftwood are five strands of pod-like forms, covered in single-use plastic, such as newspaper sleeves and dry cleaning bags.
The strands are roughly six feet long. The three-sided pods are formed with florist wire and covered with plastic in various shades of blue and turquoise. The plastic is stitched to the wire forms with waxed floss. The pods contain a small quantity of confetti-like plastic pieces. The translucent pods spin and sway, evoking life forms in the ocean.
The Artist
Jacqui Crocetta is a Washington, DC area artist. In recent years, her paintings and installations have been inspired by the ocean. In these works, Crocetta pays tribute to the awe and wonder she feels for nature, while responding to environmental concerns. The mindset of interconnectedness is the foundation of her practice. Crocetta is the recipient of several awards and grants, and her work is in private and public collections.
