The Work

The work by Kristina Penhoet, entitled “More Than Likely, Less Than Equal,” shows the ebb and flow of the struggle by marginalized communities for acceptance and celebration of their existence and contributions in our larger society. While each element is red to emphasize the visceral feeling of the pain of unacceptance, the highly textured forms, similar to clots or tumors, alternate with the smooth texture of a simple chain stitch to show the constant battle between order and chaos in our fight for acknowledgment. The variety of size combinations represent the bias, micro-aggressions, bullying, disregard, harassment that we experience on a regular basis as perceived outsiders, contrasted with the smoother areas that allow for times of calm that we feel with the true integration of our differences.

The installation, measuring 96”x60”x9”, hangs from the ceiling and barely grazes the floor. Each of the bulbous elements, created by randomized stitches, varies in measurement from 5”-30” long and 1”-8” wide with lengths of smooth chain-stitch that are 2”-96” long. While the work is entirely red, the hues vary throughout the piece.
